Mom; The first on set experience

For today we got to check out our first-ever live taping of "Mom". For those of you reading who don't know "Mom" is a sitcom about a mother and daughter who are both mothers and recovering alcoholics. For this part of the trip, we were able to sit in the audience along with other groups from Ithaca, Syracuse, and even Harvard. During the taping, we got to experience what it is like to be on a professional set, and one of the first things I noticed was how quickly the actors could get back into place. As soon as one take was over it only took a few seconds for the actors, and crew, to get back into positions to shoot it again. In addition, even though the audience was loud the actors didn't pay us much mind and went on their way. There was even at one point we thought our hype man was getting the attention of the director, who he was making fun of at the time, but it turned out the director was just giving hand signals to the actress he was addressing. Additionally, at the end of the show, they mentioned to us that there was over 200 crew working on this episode, but for us, we didn't see much of them as many were behind the scenes and some even walking on rafters above. I'll end this with two final observations; the first being that the camera crew always had two people and that they were modified to show light balances in a red tint, and that the boom ops were craned operate much like a joystick from early videogames.
